The academic program is devoted to early childhood education. The school has a rich array of 14 different majors organized around four divisions: Early Childhood Education, Special Needs Education, English Language and related disciplines, and the Arts. The focus of the early childhood department is preparation for teaching in Preschools, Kindergartens, and Early Elementary institutions either as classroom teachers or in related fields. The special needs department gives background, training, and experience in diagnosing and working with young students with physical, emotional, perceptual, and mental challenges. The English language department specifically prepares students linguistically and pedagogically to teach young learners English as a Second Language in a developmentally appropriate manner with an emphasis on aural/oral skills. The majors within the Arts department range from the visual arts of calligraphy and painting, to music including traditional forms such as Huangmei Opera, to dance both modern and traditional. The focus is both upon skills and the pedagogies necessary to teach young people. It is the belief of HPEC that the school can play a crucial role in passing along cultural traditions of countless generations of Chinese and Anhui people!
